Matelot, is one of the most remote settlements in Trinidad and Tobago.It is the last village on the North Eastern Coast of Trinidad, on the Paria Main Road. It is approximately 30 miles from the capital Port of Spain and is accessible via a single paved road which runs from Toco in the east and is separated from the rest of the island by the hills of the Northern Range. The population of Matelot is approximately 1000 and has remained fairly constant due to a continued exodus of young and productive persons who seek employment in urban areas. As the major sources of income for the remaining residents of Matelot are from fishing, hunting and agriculture.​
​​ Picture a scene out of the movie "Jurasic Park" and you've got an idea of what the remote village of Matelot looks like. With a population of about 800,the village of Matelot lies in the middle of the jungle and the sea.You fall asleep to the waves crashing against the rocks and wake up to the fresh Trinidadian air.

There is sheer number of fruit, nut, and spice trees that naturally grow in and around the village of Matelot. Some of which include: the Cocoa Orange, King Orange, Portugal, a Mammy Apple, a Pomerac,Mangoes galore, bay-leaves,almonds,nutmeg,ginger,cocoa,etc.

The food is pure deliciousness. Be prepared to try a plethora of tasty dishes and scrumptious treats. The food is made with love and a splash of unique island flavor. Some of the delicacies include: Bake and Shark, Coconut Sweet Bread, Roti, Fry Bake, Fresh Fruits,Vegetables and Fish!
